Overview

MagicDMX is a single universe USB DMX interface created by ChamSys Limited, which contains an onboard processor to process the DMX packets. Because all timing is done by the interface rather than relying on the host operating system, this ensures that the DMX timing is correct and consistent.
MagicDMX connects to MagicQ running under Windows, Mac or Linux. It doesn't use any special drivers for the device, so you can just plug and play.

MagicDMX Basic

The MagicDMX Basic interface is aimed at users wishing to evaluate and learn MagicQ, technicians wishing to test fixtures, as well as students wishing to learn lighting in schools and colleges.
MagicDMX Basic supports output of a full DMX universe via a 3 pin female XLR connector.
MagicDMX Basic is time limited to 5 hours continuous usage. After this time it is necessary to replug the device and to restart the MagicQ software.

MagicDMX Full

The MagicDMX Full interface is aimed at Professional users wishing to have full access to DMX lighting control for shows and installations. The MagicDMX Full provides a great lighting troubleshooting system.
It can be configured to either output or input a single universe of DMX, but unlike the MagicDMX Basic interface, MagicDMX Full is not time limited and can be used continuously.
MagicDMX Full outputs DMX via a 5 pin female XLR connector. If you want to use the MagicDMX interface in DMX input mode, or wish to use it with 3 pin XLR systems, a separate adapter will need to be used.

Can I purchase a MagicDMX interface from my local distributor or via phone or email?

Currently, you can only purchase MagicDMX interfaces via this website, and not from your local distributor, or from ChamSys Sales.
How much are the delivery charges?

Delivery costs to anywhere in the world are included in the price of the interface.
How long will delivery take?

We use standard postal services for deliveries of MagicDMX interfaces. Within the UK, via Royal Mail, this is usually 2-3 working days. Deliveries worldwide are usually 1-2 weeks, however other factors may affect delivery times, so please allow up to 28 days for delivery.

Which universe is MagicDMX assigned to?

MagicDMX is always assigned to Universe 1.
Can MagicDMX be used on Mac and Linux?

Yes. MagicDMX is supported under Mac OS X 10.5+ and Linux.
Does MagicDMX require an external power supply?

No. MagicDMX is powered directly from your USB port.
What happens with the MagicDMX Basic when the 5 hours has expired?

MagicQ gives warnings when the time is nearly expired. When the time expires the MagicDMX will set all DMX values to zero, and will then stop transmitting. The MagicDMX must be unplugged and then replugged, and MagicQ software restarted in order to restart DMX output from the interface.
Why is the MagicDMX Basic time restricted?

The MagicDMX is a very low cost interface designed to enable our users to evaluate MagicQ software with real lighting fixtures. However, the MagicDMX Full interface is not restricted.
Can more than one MagicDMX interface be used on a MagicQ system?

No, only one MagicDMX is supported per system.
Can MagicDMX be used with any other lighting software?

No, not at this time.
Does this mean that MagicQ is now going to be dongle protected?

No. MagicQ is still available to download for free as before and has the same functionality whether it has a MagicDMX interface plugged in or not.
Does MagicDMX unlock any of the additional MagicQ software features, such as remote ethernet control, or the Remote Focus App?

No, unlocking of additional features is only available with MagicQ Twin DMX Interfaces, MagicQ Audio Interfaces, MagicQ MIDI/SMPTE interfaces and MagicQ Wings. However, you can still use all the standard features of MagicQ with a MagicDMX interface to program and playback your shows.
Can MagicDMX Full be used to output DMX and input DMX at the same time?

No. There is only one XLR connector, so it can only support either Output or Input.
Does the MagicDMX Full interface support RDM?

No. The MagicDMX Full interface only supports output or input of one universe of DMX at once.
What protection does the MagicDMX have against damage from high voltages?

MagicDMX has electrical protection for normal usage. MagicDMX is not isolated and cannot protect your computer from damage caused by major electrical faults. Users requiring full optical isolation should consider the MagicQ Twin DMX Interface, a MagicQ Ethernet Interface or any of the MagicQ Wing products which all have full optical isolation.
